DAY OF THE YOUNG CHILD 2008:
Not Just For Kids Anymore

The 11th annual day of
the young Child event took
place in desert hot springs
on saturday, also celebrating
earth day awareness as
well.
The festivities started
around 8:30 a.m. at the Kmart
shopping Center with
a pancake breakfast, courtesy
of the Kiwanis Club. a
reptile show and petting zoo
were also featured amongst
the day’s highlights and this
year, there was a karaoke
singing contest, courtesy of
Craig michaels, local dJ.
“We’ve had a wonderful
day and a great turnout,
and a lot of support from the
county and the city,” said
Linda Kosvic, desert hot
springs Community Task
Force president and one of
the event’s organizers.
once again, the L.a. salsa
Kids did a few song and
dance numbers, like they did the previous
year. however, only three members
came this time around.
Children of all ages got to spin the
wheel and win stuffed toys. Two fire
engines were present, giving kids tours
of their trucks. plus, there was plenty of
coloring and pasting activities, provided
by several vendors. amongst those who
participated were storyland preschool,
Washington mutual Bank, riverside
County Fire department and Code enforcement,
iehp, super estrella 94.7
Fm and the County Library. mix 100.5
Fm later came by and gave away Tshirts
and Cds.
The event concluded at 2 p.m. with
raffle prizes awarded and cash prizes for
karaoke contest winners. This contest
was open to both kids and adults and the
first place winners won $25 each.
“it’s wonderful for the kids and it’s
just great,” said Cindy alford, who participated
in the singing contests. “Just
as many people here as there was last
year.” Judy shea, Ceo of the sober
age Center, has raised money this past
week as a result of this event and others
she attended. “next year will be bigger
and better,” she commented.
Coachella will celebrate their day
of the young Child festival on saturday,
april 26th at veteran’s park behind City
hall on sixth street.
