Taking It To The Streets
By sTaFF
a special meeting took place Friday
at Carl may Center discussing the conditions
of the roads in desert hot springs
and what the city plans to do about
them.
Councilmember russell Betts organized
this meeting, talking about decisions
to make about resealing or repaving
roads all over town. “so far, we’ve
had four meetings as the residential and
secondary street Committee,” Betts
said.
in desert hot springs, there are
85 miles of paved roads, and a total of
$10 million allotted from a $31 million
redevelopment agency bond available
for road work. Committee members discussed
ways of spending the money on
repaving roads that are badly worn and
cracked. “For $10 million, slurry seal
will cover 600 miles of roads,” said Camille
Lynde, committee member. “That
same amount will cover 103 miles of
roads with aram. Chip seal will cover
123 miles of roads. With $10 million, if
we are good at selecting the roads, we
could make a whole lot of people happy.”
during the meeting, Betts, Lynde
and dan patenaude were looking at city
maps, checking out which streets have
been worked on. Betts commented that
total costs to repair all roads may reach
up to $50 million. “Will people wait
around another five years for this?” he
asked. “people look around and ask,
‘Why are the roads so bad?’ and they
think it’s the water company’s fault,
when in actuality, the city hasn’t done
their job.”
even patenaude admitted that the
streets were in poor condition. “an average
road lasts 40-50 years, if properly
maintained,” he said. “We need to focus
on roads that already have sewer lines
hooked up, like eighth street.” he further
discussed the fact that many roads
do not have curbs nor sidewalks, like
what palm drive is constructing at the
south entrance of the city.
however, mission springs Water
district is working on the roads as well,
this time with installing sewers on some
streets. Betts added, “We don’t want to
put in new pavement just to have the
Water district tear it up.” so far, the
water district has been very supportive
of the road projects and have been determined
to take the first steps. They are
also responsible for installing sewers in
the dos palmas area, which sits outside
of the desert hot springs city limits.
“some roads that weren’t scheduled to
be paved will be included,” Betts added,
in regards to current paving projects.
