DHS: Idaho Senator Larry
Craig’s senate seat may be claimed
by local Desert Hot Springs resident
Hal Styles.
Styles is completely unknown
to the news media as Desert Local
News received an exclusive phone
call from Jill Kuraitis, reporter for
newwest.net to discover the local
contender for far away representation.
As Desert Local News has a
growing readership (including CBS
News Anchor Dan Rather) it is only
fitting we get the first opportunity to
illustrate the nitty-gritty on Styles.
Some background may be in order.
Senator Craig was a longtime
Idaho favorite who abandoned his
reelection campaign. The Republican
was constantly in the crosshairs
of a nationwide media frenzy of alleged
homosexual affairs. Craig lives
in denial as there is some security in
the closet for many with alternative
lifestyles.
Another Republican, Lieutenant
Governor Lisch, is the frontrunner
in a field of 7 Republicans, 2
independents and 1 democrat.
Styles, who refuses to reveal
his age, commands a timeless appeal.

The March 18th DHS
City Council Meeting
City Council Watch
DHS: Nestor Olivos, a new
member of the Desert Hot
Springs Police Department,
was sworn into public service
during the City Council
meeting at Carl May Center
on Tuesday. Chief Patrick
Williams administered the
oath while Olivos’ wife did
the honors of pinning his
badge on his chest. “We have
two more vacancies to fill and
we will be back shortly to do
more swearing ins,” said Williams.
Friends and family of
Olivos showed up to witness
this special event.
Councilman Al Schmidt
made an announcement
regarding a special Town Hall
meeting to take place at Carl
May Center on Thursday,
March 20th at 3:30 p.m. The
focus of the meeting is to take
ideas and suggestions from
citizens in regards to city
issues.
Councilman Russell Betts
urged the public to attend the
Parolee Ad Hoc Committee
meetings, which have been
successful in participation so
far. “Six months ago, Chief
Williams brought to light
the parolee issue,” he stated.
“We have seen some results
along a six month path. We
have had our share of parolees
and we will not deal with any
more parolee dumping. Please
attend those meetings.” The
last Ad Hoc Committee meeting
will take place on Monday,
April 14th at 6:00 p.m. at
Carl May Center.
During the administrative
calendar section, Council
voted 5/0 to approve Industrial
Disability Retirement
for former police Sergeant
David Henderson, who has
been unable to work for the
past three years. Also, for
existing officers and city employees,
a CalPERS Contract
Amendment was approved
by the council and by Human
Resources Director
Kim Malcolm-Valente. The
resolution of intention was adopted
by council back during
the February 19th meeting,
and the effective date for the
ordinance will be April 1st.
Finally, the issue of signage
came up, and talks between
the city council and the
Building Industry Association
began. The city council voted
3/2 to approve an extension of
a license agreement for use of
Public Right of Way signage,
with the fee increase of $59.
BIA representative Fred Bell
came to speak on the issue,
stating that kiosk signage is
well managed with the city
limits of Desert Hot Springs.
“We work closely with the
city’s code enforcement,” said
Bell. “We have someone that
drives through town checking
those kiosks. We make sure
our signs are well maintained
and not damaged.” Bell supported
the increase of the
one-time fees from $140 to
$199. He also stated that the
practice of illegal signage will
not be tolerated and will be
reported to the city manager.
