DHS Council Takes Steps
Towards Joining MSHCP
By Leslie Andrews
The Desert Hot Springs City Council
voted unanimously to approve project
consistency with the Coachella Valley Multiple
Species Habitat Conservation Plan
during their meeting Tuesday.
This motion would mean that the city of
Desert Hot Springs is going to go along with
the MSHCP plan, which they originally objected
to three years ago. Back in October of
2007, the previous city council voted to approve
a Memorandum of Understanding to
enter into the plan, which will protect 27 different
plant and animal species. The remaining
eight Coachella Valley cities belong to the
proposed plan, which has yet to be finalized
by the Fish and Wildlife Department.
“Two projects were approved as a result of
accepting the plan area,” said Assistant City
Manager Steven Mendoza. “It is the city’s
desire to cooperate with the plan, and approv-
al will give the city council and the planning
commission more information when it comes
to approving planning.”
Jonathan Evans from the Center for Biological
Diversity urged the city to adopt the
plan. “I commend the city staff and working
through this process and this has achieved a
lot for the city,” he said. “Agreements such
as this could be beneficial to this and public
organizations.”
Fred Bell, from the Building Industry Association,
has been involved with the MSHCP
from its original drafting and has been a big
proponent from day one. “We urged adoption
and it’s the right way to go,” said Bell.
“There’s no reason why cooperation cannot
co-exist.”
With that, the city council, with Councilman
Al Schmidt abstaining, voted unanimously
in favor of participation.
