March 4, 2008, the California
Highway Patrol will use up to four
uniformed traffic officers and one
supervisor, three days a week over
the next several weeks to relieve
the Department with their continuing
crime reduction efforts.
“We’re very excited about
this collaborative effort and we
hope that this will be essential
towards making the community
a safer place,” said Chief Williams.
“We’ve been planning this
program for the past five months
now.” Chief Williams added there
have been specific areas in Desert
Hot Springs that will be targeted in
particular.

and areas where gangs, parolees
and sex offenders live.
“If there is a vehicle code violation,
we will be taking appropriate
action,” said Captain Sutherland.
“We will stop the gang members
and the parolees. Hopefully take
some people to jail and write a lot
of tickets as well.” Sutherland added
that CHP officers will be working
overtime to participate in this
program.
Similar programs have been
successful statewide, in the Bay
Area and in the Inland empire, according
to the captain.

OK, so the County wants to call
the Homeless Warehouse something
else… like the Western Regional
Center… ‘cause they say it is not a
warehouse… it’s a tilt-up building
that was only advertised as a warehouse,
looks like a warehouse and
was designed as a warehouse. And
they’re using it for the homeless. But
they object to calling it the Homeless
This collaboration is possible
through the commitment of CHP
resources to assist local law enforcement
through this community
assistance program. Financing
of these efforts come from state
grants totaling about $100,000.
“The grant is fianced through the
governor to help combat gang
problems,” Sutherland added.
The program is expected to
last anywhere from three to six
months.
“Any continued cooperation
operation orchistrated by our police
chief is extremely welcome,”
said Councilmember Russell Betts.
